Astro Vinyl

Mathmos Ltd

This new version of the classic 1963 Astro lava lamp was inspired by the grooves on Vinyl records, the music medium of the 1960s & still loved and collected today.

The concept of putting vinyl grooves onto the Astro Lamp suited the radial nature of Aluminium spinning process perfectly and I worked directly with skilled Metal workers to experiment & perfect etching the grooves into the lamp's parts. A shiny black anodised finish is used to achieve the glossy vinyl-like effect. Lastly, the lamp uses a woven sawtooth black and white Fabric Lead reminiscent to those often found on Guitars, Amplifiers and other music equipment from the 60's.

Just so you know, I based the appearance of the Vinyl Grooves spacing on a Andy Williams Record I inherited from my Grandad. Groovy.
