Astro Vinyl

Mathmos Ltd

This new edition of the classic 1963 Astro lava lamp draws inspiration from the grooves of vinyl records, the iconic music medium of the 1960s that remains beloved by collectors today.

The concept of incorporating vinyl grooves into the Astro design was a natural fit with the radial nature of the aluminum spinning process. I collaborated closely with skilled metalworkers to experiment and refine the etching technique to create precise grooves on the lamp's surface. A glossy black anodized finish was chosen to replicate the shiny, smooth appearance of vinyl records. To complete the design, the lamp features a woven sawtooth black-and-white fabric cable, reminiscent of those used with guitars, amplifiers, and other 1960s music equipment.

Fun fact: the spacing of the vinyl grooves was inspired by an Andy Williams record I inherited from my grandfather. Truly groovy!
