iO - Lava Lamp

Mathmos Ltd

I worked on the design and development of the iO Lava Lamp for Mathmos Ltd in collaboration with designers Johnathan Coles and Jacob French. The giant iO lava lamp is intended for both the table and the floor & standing at 78cm (2.5ft) tall it was the first larger scale Lava lamp release from Mathmos since the early 90's, and represented a bold step forward for the historic brand. 

This big lava lamp is made of precision cast metal and takes inspiration from 1960s Retro futurism and Biomorphism. The iO has two viewing angles and the bottle can be "locked in" to the base for extra security, aswell as allowing the user to fix down the whole lamp to a surface which makes it ideal for both public and domestic spaces.
